The 2015 Massy United Insurance Under 13 interschool chess tournament finished in an exciting two way tie between Queens College and Harrison College A team on 32 points each as the tournament came to an end last weekend at the St. Michael school.
With Queens College already sitting on their final 32 points total, it came down to the Harrison College needing to win their last round match 10 0, to at least grab a share of the title. The team of Pritika Kandamaran, Tor Burrowes, Joshua Desir, Paul Mondesir and Zerab Yaicob duly won all their games and claimed a joint top spot.
Queens Colleges Shane Skinner, Azari Gittens, Aaron Haynes, Zachary Brathwaite and Jonathan Rowe would have also done themselves proud as this would have been areturn to winning ways after a long drought. The last time they had apex glory would have been back in the days of Anderson Christie, Sergei Kholukov, Robin Clarke and sports journalist Randy Bennett.
Finishing in third spot was Harrison College B, who in the last round blitzed the Lodge team 10 0 with wins for Taiye Estwick, Dylan Forde, Dominique Bryan, Tyrese King and Kyle Yearwood to finish on 29 points. This defeat capped a dismal performance from perennial power houses Lodge and it will need some serious post analysis by the team management to remedy a faultering situation.
Congrats to the winners, with many of these players playing in the 2015 Carifta chess championship to be played over the Easter weekend at the Divi Southwinds hotel.
