Under 20 School Chess Final Report and 2015 Carifta Chess Championship

The Lodge school managed to retain the Under 20 Massy United Insurance interschool chess championship as played wrapped over the last week.

Lodge A team scored 54 points from a possible 60, and finished ahead of Harrison College in second on 39 points who were just ahead of Combermere on 37 points in third.

In the final round, the Lodge A team of Orlando Husbands, Yu Tien Poon, Jerome Harewood, Bryan Prescod and Jakeel Harewood out classed the St. Leonards team 10 0 to repeat as 2015 champions. Harrisons College put Ellerslie under the hammer also recording a 10 0 victory with wins for Jonathan Shepherd, Gabriella Cumberbatch, Oshara Mason, Kemau Bryce and Giovanni Warner.

Combermere won 8 0 against Coleridge & Parry while Queens College A and Lodge B battled to a 5 5 draw. Deighton Griffith had a bye.

Most of the top players will be playing in the 2015 Carifta chess championship to be held at the Divi Southwinds hotel over the Easter weekend from April 3 – 7 with games at 9.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. and we wish them the best of luck.

The hosting of this years championship is the fourth of the championship with the previous editions being held in Trinidad, Jamaica and Martinique. With over 100 players in six sections form 9 countries participating, the cream of the the regional chess players will be on show.

Barbados will be well represented with the likes of the 2014 Under 16 Carifta champion Allon Richards, current national chess champion FIDE master Yu Tien Poon and last year’s national champion FIDE master Orlando Husbands in action. Both of the two latter players have won at the Central American and Caribbean level and will be keen to dominate their sections.
