Del Castilho defeats Colombian Grand Master

Barbadian Fide Master Martyn Del Castilho achieved a personal landmark when he defeated Colombian Grand Master Sergio Barrientos in round 4 of the Continental Chess Chess Championship. The Continental Chess Championship features the top players in the Americas vying for a qualifying spot at the next Chess World Cup.

Del Castilho whose participation is sponsored by Sun General Insurance and Going Places Travel has positioned himself well after 4 rounds with 3 points from a possible 4 and depending on the mix of players could put himself in line for an International Master Norm.

Del Castilho got off to a good start with a win against Hector Lemus of El Salvador.  In round 2 he lost a tough battle against the highly rated and very experienced Chilean Grand Master Ivan Morovic Fernandez. He then put together 2 consecutive wins defeating Carlos Avalos of the USA and Grand Master Barrientos.

He will now face another tough challenge in round 5 when he meets the highly Fide Master Matias Perez Gormaz of Chile.

Local chess fans will be keenly following the event at chess-results.com and routing for their local chess hero. The BCF would also like to express its sincere appreciation to Sun General and Going Places.
