Leigh Sandiford of Providence is the 2016 Under 12 chess champion of Barbados. He did this in dominant fashion when he won his last 3 games last Saturday at the St. Michael School to finish top of the 22 player field with a maximum of 6 points from his 6 games.
In rounds 4 Sandiford defeated the then co-leader and eventual second place finisher Zachary Mastrosimone of the U.S.A to take the sole lead of the tournament. Following in round 5, Sandiford found himself under severe pressure against Vanessa Greenidge of Charles F Broome , but he showed great determination in turning the position around and claiming victory.Â In the last round after some butterflies against 2016 Carifta Under 12 girls champion Azariah Johnson , Sandiford eventually won to claim complete victory.
Mastrosimone defeated Yeshshua Hill in the last round to deservedly finish Â in second spot on 5 points, with Hill eventually finishing third on four points.
Greenidge won from Elisha Ifill in the last round to finish 4th on tie-break just ahead of Johnson, Jishua Harris and Nathan Russel. All players also having 4 points. Johnson won the prize for best girl on show not in the top four finishers.
Other last round results also saw victories for Chaddeus Franklyn, Romario Bishop and Jamani Bowen.
The next tournament on the Barbados Chess Federationâ€™s calendar will be the 2016 United Girls chess championship for females under 20 year old, which will be played at the Bridgetown Chess Centre, Cavans Lane, Bridgetown, St. Michael on the next two Saturdays, June 25 and July 2 starting at 9.00 a.m..
